In the old days the only "music videoes" we used to see, was the performance of the actual performer, for examble, The Beatles - She Loves You" (Youtube link).
First a little "acient" history, It all started in the late 1970's, with The Sight On Sound, the first music channel that showed videos, it was the front runner for the now well-known music channel MTV ( Music Television), where they started to show videos of the artist performing ("Music videos").
As we know, it all started with the performances of the artist, later on it became more theatrical, and today it's like watching a short-film.
Outfits (costumes), make-up, choreography, stories( sometimes hidden), and messages/signs, and often it also expresses how the musicians style is, as we know it's all about image.
It has become a new way for the artist to express themselves, and a new performing art. Today we don't just give awards for best Movie or Singer, we have Best Directed Musicvideo, Best Music Video, and Best Choreography and so on...
And in some cases it can be a true masterpiece, then other times it all just seems plain wierd, but it's in the eye of the beholder.
Thank God for expressionisme :-)
